A 23-year-old man who has been terrorizing residents of Assin Fosu and its environs in the Central Region has finally been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in hard labour by a Circuit Court in Cape Coast, after eluding the police for years.

According to the Assin Fosu Divisional Crime Officer, the convict, Danjumah Iddrisu Mahamadu, said to be involved in series of crimes, robbed at gunpoint two school girls who were returning home after night studies.

ASP Joshua Kwasi Ansu told DAILY GUIDE that Danjumah was serving 36 months in jail at the Ankaful Prisons for stealing, when escaped to commit the offence.

He was charged with two counts of robbery and another count of possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority, and was sentenced on his own plea.

The Cape Coast Circuit Court Two presided over by S.K. Otoo sentenced Danjumah to 10 years each on the two counts of robbery, and another five years for possession of narcotic drugs.

The court however said the sentences should run concurrently, hence Danjumah will spend a total of 15 years in jail.

The gun used in committing the crime was also confiscated to the police by the court. The facts of the case are that on April 28, 2011, two female final year students of Obiri Yeboah Senior High School who were preparing for their examination attended night classes and on their way back home at about 2:00am, Danjumah accosted them and demanded for their mobile phones.

Danjumah, who had brandished a gun, rushed on the students and started attacking them for the phones.

He succeeded in collecting two phones worth GH¢140 and when he attempted to escape, the students raised the alarm, attracting some residents from the area.

Sensing that he could be overpowered, Danjumah fired a warning shot to ward off any attempt to arrest him before escaping into a nearby bush.

On June 3, 2011, one of the victims spotted Danjumah in town and raised the alarm, leading to his arrest.

According to ASP Ansu, when the police picked up the convict, they found wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp in his pocket.

The police then proceeded to his house for a search and found the gun used in the robbery.
